Piper Clipper

Piper PA-16 Clipper

This is the airplane that flew over the mountains on the brink of winter in yesterday’s blog, and is the airplane that I truly learned to fly in. It was built in 1949 and was simple, rugged, and functioned like an airborne jeep. I flew it in and out of hayfields and a golf course in Nebraska, and off of mountain airstrips and dirt roads in Wyoming and Washington.

It had a 108 horsepower engine and had four seats though most Clipper pilots considered it able to carry two and a half, maybe three adults. Flying in the mountains in Wyoming pushed it to its limits and taught me what it could do and more importantly what it could not do. Many great memories and and adventures are stored within these photos.
