Not-A-Bee

The “not-a-bee” at a flower in Fatu Hiva, Marquesas Islands

On a hike from Omoa to Hanavave on the island of Fatu Hiva in the South Pacific, I came across these beautiful flowers in the dense woods. As I composed the image an insect flew into view, and I quickely snapped the image before I could fly away. It was obviously as attracted to the flower as I.

Several have commented on the photo of the flower and the “bee” hovering nearby. But its not a bee, even though that is usually thought of when it comes to flowers and pollination. When asked, then, just what was it, I came up with “not-a-bee, “and thus it shall be.

This is dedicated to all those I have encountered who have left the well-traveled way to find their own exciting way through life and discover what mysteries lie beyond the beaten path.
