Kites in a Tree

Swallow-tailed Kites in Neighborhood Tree

Charlie Brown has nothing to regret about these kites in the tree. They are swallow-tailed kites, spectacular raptors with white heads and chests and dark wings and a marvelous forked tail. We see them gracefully soaring low over the trees this time of year, occasionally diving to the ground to catch a small critter or an insect for a meal.

Fifteen of them occupied this dead tree, and I suspect that they represent several families, adults and juveniles. They arrive in Florida in late spring to hatch and raise their young and then depart in the fall for Central and South America. Some travel as far as 10,000 miles, and that’s a long way, Charlie Brown!
