Sirius-ly!

Sirius low in the morning sky.

Finally, Sirius is on the rise! This means that the peak summer temperatures will soon be on the decline. It was once thought that summer’s heat was due to the alignemnt of the sun with Sirius, the brightest star in our nighttime sky. It had been proposed that their combined heat made summer’s days so hot, and once the two were no longer aligned, daytime temperatures would cool.

Sirius is also called the Dog Star since it follows Orion, the hunter across the sky like a faithful companion. It’s coincidental seasonal alignment with the sun is sometimes referred to as the “dog days of summer.” Actually, we feel almost no heat from Sirius, and now it is known that the cooling has to do with the tilt of the earth as it orbits the sun. However, Sirius still serve as a rising sentinal of relief from the summer swelter.
