Two Cents Worth

1865 Two Cent Piece

Living on an old homestead in central Nebraska yielded treasures of the past from time to time. This 1865 bronze two cent piece was found sometime in the early 1960’s, laying in the dirt near a chicken coop. It was promptly added to my coin collection, which up to that point consisted mostly of pennies. Back then, nickles and dimes were too valuable to be hoarded. However, the value of this coin was not in its purchasing power, but in its link to the Civil War, and to the unknown person who had lost it in the previous century. I still marvel at the corroded sight of it and wonder of the many hands that held and valued it in the past.
