A Different Sort of Relativity

Near Shelton, Nebraska, Late 1950’s

I remember posing for this photo while visiting my brother at Platte Valley Academy but I don’t ever remember feeling like I was that small. Sure, my siblings, my parents, and most other people I knew then were larger than me, but to my mind I was “just right.” I still feel that way, though now I am the size of most other adults, and kids seem small from my current point of view. When that all came about, I don’t really recall; it is just my perspective.

The same sort of thing applies to looking “young” or looking “old.” I remember once thinking that people in their 50’s (20 years younger than my current age), looked, “old” but they look “young” to me now.

It’s all a matter of relativity. How big or small you feel and how old or young you think you look depends on your current perspective, not how others see you. But the more I think of it, how big or how old I may appear really isn’t that important. After all, I don’t have to look at me!
