Yesterday morning the Moon passed Venus very closely, so closely that in Europe and Africa the Moon hid Venus from view for a brief period of time. Then the moon moved on to produce this delightfully separated pair.
Amazingly, Venus also goes through phases just like the Moon as it circles the Sun, and currently it appears to be at quarter phase when seen through a telescope This was noticed by Galileo centuries ago, in 1610, and was one of the things that landed him in hot water with the powers of that time since it contradicted their theologic dogma of an Earth-centric universe.
