Booby Watching

Brown Boobies off the bow of the ship.

We spent a considerable amount of time in the Sky Observation Lounge on the upper deck at the front of the boat. I was fascinated by these brown boobies surfing the air pressure wave ahead of the bow. Soaring back and forth, they rarely flapped a wing until they spotted a fish and then dove to one side or the other in pursuit of the prey.

At one point, a small flying fish appeared scooting away from the boat just above the water; a booby swooped downwards but missed catching it by mere inches when the fish splashed back into the sea and swam swiftly downwards. I was totally mesmerized by the unfolding scene when the rest of the group decided to move to another area of the boat.

”But we won’t see the birds there,” I protested.

“Well fine, then,” my wife retorted, “you can just stay here and look at all the boobies.” That was one admonition I had never expected to hear from my wife. Okay, time to go.
