English Harbour from Shirley Heights, Antigua

On the southeastern side of Antigua, Shirley Heights provides spectacular views of the island and bays including English Harbour, seen on the photo above. Once, these heights held cannons that protected the harbour from Spanish and French pirates. I suspect that the English pirates had little to fear since their skulduggery was generally supported by England.

This is the site of Nelson’s Dockyard, where the notable naval commander, Horatio Nelson, served for three years in the 1780’s, and it is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It no longer has to guard against enemy bombardment, but is frequently invaded and overrun by tourists like us.
