Serenity After Tragedy

Saint Pierre, Martinique, with Mount Pelee in the background.

Mount Pelee rests serenely in the background, looking down on Saint Pierre which it destroyed in a massive volcanic explosion in 1902. Since that time, the town and the landscape have healed and have reclaimed their prior tranquility. Preserved ruins in the foreground serve as a reminder of the sleeping dragon within the mountain on the horizon. It will again erupt and hurl further fiery destruction downwards sometime in the future.

Unlike the last eruption, the next one should not catch the citizenry unaware. Instruments on the ground as well as in airplanes and satellites, keep close watch on this and other volcanoes so that people can can be forewarned of any danger and take appropriate action well before the dragon reawakens.
