When the Bough Breaks

Tree bomb in front yard.

Living in the woods has its benefits and its drawbacks. The shade is welcome and the trees beautiful, but at times, they cast down broken branches, especially during stormy weather. This branch came down during passage of a cold front and was about 12 feet long and 2-inches wide at its base. Probably not too dangerous, but I had been weeding right where it fell about two hours before. Much larger branches occasionally come down as well, so we avoid the yard in windy or stormy weather.

The winds also brought down a hailstorm of acorns that had been clinging to the oaks and raised quite a rattle as they bounced off roofs and sidewalks. They cause little damage, however, and some times are amusing, such as when they create that hollow sound as they bounce off my head. Please don’t ask me how I know or who it is that thinks it’s funny.
