Through Showers and Sunbeams

Along the Cross Florida Greenway

Sabers of sunlight thrust intermittently through cracks in a grey, veiled sky as I walked along the forest trail. Light rain drops occasionally rattled the tree canopy and a few did make it through to moisten scattered areas of my sweatshirt. I had hoped to walk out 2.5 miles and return, but started to have second thoughts. A quick check of weather radar with my cell phone indicated no heavy rainfall any time soon, so I continued on.

The trail crossed a county road and the rocky, root-littered path became smooth, sandy, and padded by oak leaves and pine needles. Road noise faded away and the calls of crows, woodpeckers, wrens, and other birds created a very peaceful background.

Forget the 2.5 miles as originally intended, I pressed on until the GPS announced 3 miles walked, and then, only reluctantly, turned around as rain showers again returned. Sure, I got a little wet on the way home, but the sights, sounds, and fresh air made it more than worth it. I just have to do it again, very soon!
