Turkey Lurking

Wandering along a sandy trail in the woods, we chanced across this flock of turkeys. The male seemed a bit more impressed with himself than were the ladies (as usual!). We kept our distance and watched as they slowly meandered into the brush, stopping now and then to peck and swallow some choice morsel. The dark hens walked quite sedately and purposefully through the scene, but the white one hobbled along quite slowly. Closer examination through binoculars showed her to be missing the lower part one of her legs.

Farther along the trail we found where they had crossed it earlier that day, leaving a gaggle of fresh footprints in the sand. While the turkeys had left transient tracks in the sand, they created indelible memories for us.
