Upside Downy

Downy Woodpecker

We were nearly home from a morning walk when the rapid tap-tap-tap of a small woodpecker drew our eyes upward. A downy woodpecker dangled from a small, broken branch directly overhead as it pecked and dined on the larvae it found. Then it ascended slowly, spiraling around the vertical branch, stopping now and then to listen, peck, and eat. It seemed as satisfied with its morning morsels as we were to watch its progress ever upward until it reached the top of the branch and then flew on to another.
