The Present Past

Cardiff Castle, Wales

What a sight to behold, both then and now. Once an ominous bastion, it is now an imposing relic of the past. It was first built in the 11th century over a 4th century Roman fort, and was refurbished and rebuilt several more times through the subsequent centuries, while it sometimes successfully, sometimes not, fended off invading armies. Now it guards memories rather than royalty and soldiers, but it still commands respect and awe from invading tourists.

We were fortunate enough to visit this site in October, 2019, just months before the invasion of another kind sent us all seeking shelter from an unseen enemy that could penetrate even the mightiest of castles.
