Tales Orange

Oranges in the Neighborhood

These oranges always ripen in February, during some of the coldest time of the year. Yet, they seem to be doing well since we’ve had no hard freezes this year (yet). They remind me of a story I read in an aviation magazine several years ago.

It seems that a skydiver had discovered that the oranges in an orchard by the drop zone became visible just when he was at the proper altitude to deploy his parachute. He started looking for oranges as he free fell, to let him know it was time to open the parachute rather than watching his altimeter. One day he became aware that the ground seemed lurching dangerously towards him, even though no oranges were visible, and he hastily released the parachute, then moments later came to safe, but off target landing. It seems that a day or two before, a crew had picked the oranges. Lesson learned.
