Catkins

Fallen Pollen-producing Tree Parts

Just days ago they were light golden-green blooms, clinging to the tiniest branches of the surrounding oak treas. Since then, they have shed their pollen, have turned brown, and have fallen, scattering their sad remnants over driveways, cars, and patios. We once heard a botanist call these dangling male tree appendages a rather indelicate, though accurate, word. Recently we learned that they are also known as catkins, a much nicer and even pleasing word that is much better for use in polite conversations.
