Red-shouldered Hawk on Its Predator Perch

The hawk settled on its usual branch in our backyard where it perched, patiently watching, waiting for subtle signs of the slightest motion of some sort of prey that it could turn into a meal. Both it and its mate on a nearby nest were in serious need of nourishment, while tiny creatures below did all they possibly could to avoid being the hawk’s next meal. The waiting game of survival continued until a target was identified; the hawk swiftly descended, trying to counter evasive actions of the prey. It was over quickly, and regardless of the outcome, life continued on, one way or the other.
