Wings in Waiting

Monarch Caterpillar and Chrysalis

A neighbor summonsed us to a severely-eaten milkweed plant where two small monarch caterpillars nimbly nibbled away at remaining stalks of the plant. Others had devoured all of the leaves, and then each had crawled off to nearby shrubs to form a chrysalis, from which they will emerge with wings in 10-14 days as the familiar monarch butterfly.

We were amazed by the sight, and I took several pictures of small caterpillars as well as of chrysalises seen on the right two photos. Later our neighbor sent a close up of one of the mature, plump caterpillars that had just attached to a twig to start its metamorphosis (left photo). With any luck, we will get to watch the full process. What a privilege, the ways of life are so amazing!
