Round Engine Rumble of Times Past

AT-6 Roars Overhead

I was zeroing in on the sun for my daily observations when I heard the unmistakable rumble of a big, round, radial engine headed my way. Though trees obscured the view at first, I guessed that it might pass overhead. I got the camera ready and managed to get this photo during the one and a half seconds that it was visible. Wow! What a sight, what a sound!

The “T-6” was an advanced trainer for pilots during WW II and many of the veterans I saw while working for the VA earned their wings in one of these. They went on to many aerial war “adventures” that most would rather not relive, and many of their comrades never returned. Still the sight and sound of such a venerable aircraft still gives me a thrill, and I am ever grateful for those aviators of the past as well as to those in the present who keep their memories alive.
