A giant sunspot flared several times recently and hurled bits of the sun towards earth. The rejected solar material burst into the earth’s magnetic field two days later to produce this spectacular light show that has been visible as far south as Florida, and even Puerto Rico! Per Eddie Irizarry of the Sociedad de Astronomia del Caribe (Astronomical Society of the Caribbean) auroras were last seen in Puerto Rico in 1859 and 1921. Very Rare, but it’s possible even more may be on the way tonight and tomorrow night!
Active Region 3664 pictured above is continuing to flare and has sent more blasts our way. On the photo above it is nearly 120,000 miles across, and its brightest areas are magnetic explosions like the ones that created such a show. There may be even more this year as the sun reaches the peak of its sunspot activity cycle.
Watch again tonight and tomorrow night for further auroral displays. For more details see: https://spaceweather.com/archive.php?view=1&day=12&month=05&year=2024 and https://www.swpc.noaa.gov/.
