Cruising Along the Greenway

What happens to wayward vehicles in the greenway.

During a recent walk along the nearby Marjorie Harris Carr Cross Florida Greenway we encountered an automotive remnant where it was not supposed to be. The greenway was established in 1991 and was named in honor of Marjorie Harris Carr who had led opposition to the Cross Florida Barge Canal that was originally intended where the greenway is now located. Somehow the message soaked in that it might not be a good idea to introduce salt water from the canal into the Florida aquafer, and the project was finally cancelled by President Richard Nixon in 1971.

It is unclear exactly how or when the derelict auto ended up within the greenway or if it arrived there before or after auto access was restricted. Fortunately, the greenway is thriving while the automotive intruder slowly rusts into oblivion, and obviously it was not Marjorie Harris’ car.
