Sore Sower

Sower Atop Nebraska Capitol Building

Rising 400 feet above the plains of Nebraska, the state capitol building displays a statue of the Sower broadcasting seeds by hand. It represents the agricultural foundation of Nebraska. When I was young, a story circulated about a grade schooler having visited the capitol with his class. Afterwards the teacher asked the students to draw a picture about their class trip. He drew an outline of the towering capitol building with a giant red spot at the top.

When the asked what the red spot was, he replied that it was the sore on the top of the capitol. Perhaps something had been lost in the interpretation, but if I were the Sower in that position for so many decades, I might be a little “sore” as well.
