Racing Rainbows

Rainbow Over Home Port

We had enjoyed a late-afternoon boat cruise through canals and waterways around Henderson Lake in Florida, while skirting rain squalls here and there as noted in yesterday’s post (https://eskildoodle.com/2024/06/17/storming-the-sunset/). After turning around to return, someone noticed a stormy-looking cloud to the northeast and wondered aloud if it was headed our way. A check of the radar showed that it wasn’t quite yet over our destination, but it would be a race to see if we or the rain got there first.

As we turned onto the final stretch of water, a partial rainbow appeared, shimmering in a band of falling water. The rainbow had won the race. At its end lay not a pot of gold, but our destination. Unlike the rainbow shown to the biblical Noah as a promise of no more floods, this rainbow promised that were were indeed going to get wet.

A few drops appeared moments later followed by light rain. The drops grew larger and thicker as we raced towards the dock, and then tied up the boat and sought shelter under trees. Soon, we were back in the house, damp but not drenched, and quite enthralled by the aquatic adventure.
