Beauty and the Best

Kamoa ukulele top, Pono ukulele bottom,

The bright red Kamoa ukulele, that I have named Lokelani (Maui Rose), is a delight to see and I keep it prominently displayed. It also has a nice sound, but its fretboard doesn’t quite match my hand, so I have to work at playing it well.

The plain brown, mahogany, Pono ukulele, on the other hand, fits my hands perfectly, has a wonderful sound, and is the best ukulele that I own. I named it “Ahulili” after a Hawaiian mountain that is greatly respected though not as high as the surrounding peaks. The Hawaiian song of the same name describes Ahulili as being a bit jealous of the higher surrounding mountains, however, I doubt the same can be said of either ukulele.

Lokilani gets the looks, and Anhulili gets the action; each has its own admirable virtues. In my mind, they are both beautiful and perfect for their respective purposes.
