Doorhandle of Time

Closet Doorhandle from Long Ago

I remember, as a child, seeing this handle on the door of a makeshift closet under the stairs. It had been painted white and there was an opening in it for a skeleton key, but there was no corresponding lock mechanism. It was a fun place to hide and to pretend to lock and unlock with whatever key I had at the moment. The words “skeleton key” added to the intrigue and mystic of the moments spent playing in and around that closet.

When the house was torn down, I kept the handle and later brushed off the paint. Now it decorates the wall and serves like one of Harry Potter’s portkeys to transport me now and then to another, simpler time of wonder and discovery.
