Inspiration

We recently had a delightful dinner at “Big Lee’s Serious About BBQ,” Ocala, Florida.

A family member, Big Lee, passed the barbecue dream to Rashad Jones, who ran with it by learning and perfecting the skill and then sharing it with the community. His food trucks are flocked by customers, and he has opened a local restaurant as well. He participated in Season 3 of the Food Network’s “BBQ Brawl” show and earned the title “Master of ‘Cue,” and also earned his own show.

He is heartened by his accomplishments and humbled by his fame, stating that it is simply shows “what can be accomplished through hard work and sacrifice.” Thanks Big Lee and Rashad, not only for the food but also for the inspiration.

“OUR STORY BEGINS

In A Small Town

My passion for barbecue and smoking meats developed years ago when I first witnessed my wife’s uncle, Leon (aka “Big Lee”), and his incredible skills on the smoker in the Mississippi Delta, Greenwood to be exact. The quality of the food he made was unparalleled and I couldn’t get it out of my mind. But beyond his sheer talent, Uncle Leon had such a joy for cooking and, moreover, for sharing his amazing food with others. He was generous with his trade secrets, too, freely giving me tips on how to achieve better results. We lost Uncle Leon in October of 2012 and his passing has made me more conscious of not only how well I cook, but also how many people I share this gift with here at our food trucks and restaurant. He was an amazing man and he still inspires us today. Thanks, Big Lee!

  1. Hi Dr. E! When I worked at the health department in Ocala, I shared an office with Rashad. He is a remarkable guy. He ran the program to educate teens and younger about the dangers of drugs, and all that goes with that. He held many rallies and had those kids in the palm of his hands. He is a very humble guy. He and his wife Patrice are the epitome of the American dream. They are an example of what hard work and dedication can do! They also are raising a wonderful family! He never toots his own horn, so I’m sure he didn’t tell you that he is a bad ass rapper! He would have the kids yell out four or five things that they wanted him to include in his rap, and he would immediately use all those words to create a positive message. So happy that he and his wife are enjoying success! They deserve it!Regards, Linda Lowry-Harding
