Surf’s Up!

Teahupo’o on Tahiti Iti
Distant Surf Seen from Beach at Teahupo’o, Tahiti Iti

Nearly two years ago we visited Teahupo’o in Tahiti Iti where the Olympic surf competition is now in progress. The photo of breakers near the distant reef greatly understate the immensity of the waves and the dangers involved in daring to surf those breaks. Why is the competition held here when France is hosting the Olympics? This is in French Polynesia, and these are some of the most challenging waves in the world.

Yesterday we watched the men’s competition and were delighted with the surfing as well as the scenery, which brought back some very special memories. Competition will resume today starting at 1 PM and will continue for the next couple of days. I wish the surfers well and may they all stay safe in this daring event.
