
Yes, snowberries really exist! I didn’t know that until our recent walk along the Fernhill Wetlands when they appeared along the trail and brightened our day. Even though they were already known to plant lovers and botanists, it was still exciting to discover them on my own.
They are described as not edible, but taste like wintergreen. (I guess someone must have found that out when they discovered that the berries were not edible.) They also were touted to have medicinal effects for various ailments, but were “highly toxic” if taken in large amounts (just like modern medicines, I guess). Regardless, I think that, by far, their greatest asset is their eye-catching beauty, especially when coated with diamonds of dew.
