Breadbasket

U.S. Agricultural Heartland

Flying over the central U.S. drove home the reality of this part of the country; this is where our food comes from. The crazy-quilt pattern of fields and pastures brings back memories of my youth on a farm in Nebraska. Life was challenging at times, but being so close to the land with our own garden, chickens, and livestock, there was always enough to eat, even if our clothes were a bit ragged. I loved being on the farm, and it was a great place to grow up, though it sometimes took the dogged determination so symbolically expressed in the field on the lower right.
