What’s In a Name?

Wegovy Ad on TV

Well, they have a medication originally designed to treat diabetes so they name it “Wegovy!” Seriously? Where do they get those names for drugs? This sounds like the name of a clueless fifth grader. Even after over 40 years of practicing medicine, I still don’t understand how drugs get their names. Since it controls blood sugar, why not name it “Diabettery?” Or maybe “Sugarlowerly?”

But wait! It has been discovered to be an effective weight loss agent, which truly is a major breakthrough, and I wish the best of success for the people using it. Had the medication been originally developed for weight loss, then maybe it could have been named “Slimquickly!”
