Once in 80,000 Years

Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS on right, and Venus in the treetop on the lower left.

Last evening, October 14, 2024, Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS was visible in the western sky. It will be visible for the next several days in the early evening, and will gradually fade as it climbs higher and higher into the sky.

If you get a chance, try and spot it in the next couple of days. Once its gone, it will be away for a very long time. It came from the outer reaches of the solar system known as the Oort Cloud, way beyond Pluto. Its next return won’t be for 80,000 years, and I’m not waiting around for that!
