Advanced Training

AT-6 departing local airfield.

The distinct growl of a big, radial engine grew into a deafening roar as this AT-6, a WW-II advanced trainer airplane, departed a local airstrip recently. Leaving a trail of white smoke from its airshow smoker, it left more than just a passing impression. Decades ago, planes like this prepared young pilots for war in Europe and in the Pacific.

Some never returned while some came back to become airline pilots, businessmen, and one even became president of the United States. Most however returned to their “ordinary” lives as citizens of the country they had so courageously defended, and were often reluctant to even talk of their service abroad. However, they will never be forgotten as long as the magnificent relics of that time remain flying.

Special thanks to those who work so hard and earnestly to keep these memories airborne.
