Amphicar at Disney Springs

While aboard a pontoon boat near Disney Springs we saw this Amphicar driving on, of all things, water! Immediately three words came to mind: “Blub, blub, blub,” as in the sound of something sinking. But no, it merrily bobbed its way about the water and is a popular attraction at the springs.

Amphicars were made in Europe in the early 1960’s and were designed to be land and seaworthy; sort of. They were described as being more for fun than for utility. Never-the-less, some have actually crossed the English Channel, during very calm seas I assume. Others have traveled 450 miles down the Yukon River from Whitehorse to Dawson City as part of the Alaska gold rush tribute.

Several still exist, including the ones at the Boathouse in Disney Springs. This one did look like fun, but when I saw it, I couldn’t help thinking how glad I was to be in a regular boat.
