Funie Monday

In Honor of William Jephunneh “Funie” Steed

I couldn’t suppress a chuckle when I saw this name, and I just had to take the photo. But learning is even better than laughing, so I did an internet search to discover the namesake of this road. It was named after William Jephunneh “Funie” Steed, a well-respected attorney who was also a military veteran who made significant contributions to the U.S. war efforts of WW I and WW II.

For more than half a century he practiced law, aggressively supported the Florida Citrus industry, and led various community organizations. His middle name, “Jephunneh,” is a biblical name roughly translated as “He Will Turn To,” or “He Will Face.” From his obituary it is apparent that the name certainly fit.

I have assumed that his nickname, “Funie,” is a shortening of his middle name, and I have to imagine that he had a sense of humor. Regardless, I have come to realize that the road sign isn’t funny at all, but rather, a tribute to a respected Floridian. Good way to start a Monday.
