Clusters of Memories

Jupiter, Hyades, and the Pleiades in the Evening Sky

I have been fascinated with the stars and planets for as long as I could look up and see them. In the clear, dark Nebraska skies they were a glorious glowing spectacle that could not be ignored. The image above shows Jupiter, the brightest object in the photo, perched above a V-shaped cluster of stars known as the Hyades. To the right the tiny Pleiades cluster catches the eye.

This photo, with the wandering Jupiter in the realm of the star clusters, brings back a flood of memories. By far the most vivid memory is of a walk in the woods along the Platte River on a cold January night when I was 11 years old. There I experienced an “initiation” of sorts by a species that is often feared, but that I came to deeply respect. See: https://eskildoodle.com/winter-wander/.
