Standoff

The Hawk and the Squirrel

The squirrel paused warily, watching a hawk barely 20 feet away. The squirrel had the advantage since both were on the ground where squirrel could outrun and out maneuver the hawk. Whether or not he knew, the squirrel had another advantage, the hawk already had its prey in its talons and would waste no further energy in another hunt.

The squirrel flipped its tail wildly and kept a careful distance, seemingly taunting the hawk. Finally, the hawk flew away keeping low to the ground due to the weight of its prey. Strangely, the squirrel chased after the hawk briefly before abruptly turning around and darting for a tree on the opposite side of the yard.

Perhaps he finally noticed the dead squirrel in the hawk’s talons, or perhaps he just thought…I don’t know, do squirrels actually think?
