Where the Contrails End

Shadows of Contrails Over Colorado

We were not alone in the morning sky as we passed from Nebraska to Colorado recently. Shadows from the contrails of other planes left dark lines on the ground parallel to our direction of flight until they abruptly ended somewhere over eastern Colorado. Other contrail shadows that can be seen crossing our flight path seem to have either ended or began in the same general region.

Apparently atmospheric conditions, most likely the humidity or air temperature, abruptly changed to prevent contrail formation beyond that region. While their path through the sky disappeared from that point on, it revealed something of the nature of the atmosphere.
