Hither, Slither, and Yon

Lizard on Grand Cayman Island

This iguana basked in the sun, aware of our presence but not frightened. It knew how close it could allow us to approach before it had to flee, and it was not about to expend any unnecessary energy.

Its markings suggest that it is a cross between the Blue Iguana and the invasive Green Iguana. While the former is treasured as an island native, the latter is an intruder from other parts of South and Central America, and their presence threatens the Blue Iguanas.

As is common for all of us creatures, when opportunity arrises, they will gladly interbreed where possible and blur the distinction as to who came from where. In this case it can be truly stated that this iguana’s ancestors slithered in from hither, thither, and yon.
