An Iron Shore

Fossil Reefs at North Side, Grand Cayman

The rugged, fossil-laden Ironshore Formation in the foreground is the remnant of an ancient reef and the remains of creatures that once thrived there. It was laid down eons ago when sea levels were higher and is now slowly eroding away from the effects of waves and microorganisms.

In the distance, waves break on the current island reefs where living creatures now find home and sustenance. Eons from now, perhaps some of it may also be preserved as fossils like those in the Ironshore, as testimony of the eternity of the sea and the determination of life to endure in an ever changing world.
