The bush by a fence in our yard had some vines peeking out here and there between its leaves. I was determined to remove them but they kept breaking off, leaving their roots in the ground. Finally one stout vine held until it felt like something gave way below. Another tug, and even more seemed to give way; progress! Finally one last tug brought the vine and its bulbous root into view, revealing the source of the problem.
No wonder I had trouble getting it out of the ground. I didn’t know whether to laugh or run when I saw it; it truly looked demonic. Though I was glad to have gotten it up, I couldn’t help wondering what else might lurk underground that I really didn’t want to see.
