A Veteran’s Wife

C-47 Flyby

The recent flyby of a WWII vintage Army C-47 with invasion stripes brought back memories of a person I never met and one that I will never forget in what seemed like a different lifetime.

She was an excellent nurse, very kind and caring, and it was my privilege to work with her for several years. Her husband had flown C-47’s in WW II in Europe, carrying troops and supplies into battle. He was proud that despite adverse conditions and close maneuvering on the airfields, he never once damaged a wingtip.

Over the years, time finally took its toll and he required skilled nursing care at a local facility. When not at work, his wife attended him in the facility, stating that she was a licensed nurse and no one could take better care of him then she would. One day during one of his more lucid moments, he remarked that he had become quite a burden for her. She gently took his hand and replied, “We’re going to stick together.”
