From Film to Pixels to Cellphone

Digital Camera Photo from 2002

Twenty-four years ago I bought my first digital camera. That summer we cruised in the Fairy Boat from Puget Sound to the north end of Vancouver Island, and I carried a film camera, a slide camera, and my new, three-megapixel digital camera to document the trip. When all the slides, photos, and digital images were viewed, I quit using the first two and have photographed digitally ever since.

With digital images, I can control the final image size and appearance, and it can be instantly shared online. Also, there is no cost of film and processing, so I can shoot as many photos as I want and just delete what I don’t like. The 8″ X10″ photo taken above was taken in Hawaii less than a year after the boat odyssey and now hangs on a wall in our home. That was about the maximum possible enlargement with that camera.

Now, I rarely use even the dedicated digital cameras; the camera on my iPhone produces better images for 95% of what I want to photograph and those photos can be enlarged up to to 24″ X 36.” Wow, the little “smart aleck” smart phone has turned my old film cameras and even my digital SLR camera in to relics!
