Ripples in Time

Ripples in Ancient Rock at Devil’s Lake

Long before animals or plants roved or grew on land, gentle wavelets in a shallow sea rippled the sands along the shore. Over the eons heat and pressure turned the sands to stone, then fused it into quartzite. Those rocky remnants of that distant past still bear the ripples that were patterned so long ago.

Now those remnants encircle Wisconsin’s Devil’s Lake where, once again, shallow waters swirl sands into ripples and continue the process that was preserved in stone so long ago.
