Knocking on Wood

Pileated Woodpecker

The slow, steady thunk, thunk, thunk, of a piliated woodpecker pecking at a tree attracted my attention once again to the back yard where this sly character paused for a moment as it worked its way up the tree in search of unsuspecting bugs. Its pecking pattern is unmistakable, as is its shirl, shrieking call, and hardly a day passes that we don’t either see or hear one of these feathered friends going about its business. They always add a touch of delight to our day, even though they seem to be considerably less impressed with us.
