Juvenile Ibises in the Neighborhood

American white ibises frequently visit our neighborhood looking for bugs and amphibians to eat. Foraging in groups improves the success of the hunt and provides more wary eyes to watch for predators such as hungry hawks. While the adults are white, the juveniles remain dark brown in color, like the ones in the photo, until two to three years old.

While this group has no adults, the “teenagers” frequently mix with adults during their morning forages, but without the noticeable drama sometimes associated with their human counterparts.
