Wild winds whipped up a party hat for the Mount Hood, while on its flanks below, inside the warm Timberline Lodge, decorations and tables awaited guests at the Mother’s Day buffet. Great food in a great setting. #mothersday #timberlinelodge #mounthood

Hoodwinked
Willful winds rattled the rafters and sent sobs and sighs down the flue, but it could not dispirit the reflections of the rising sun that caressed the slopes of Mount Hood. Undaunted by the gale, the peak perched proudly along the horizon as if grinning, and for a moment, it even seemed to wink. #mounthoodContinue reading “Hoodwinked”

Above It All
Thunderheads popped up here and there as we climbed out of the Orlando airport traffic area. The flight was routed between the most active storms, but could we see them flashing outside our window. It was a beautiful spectacle from a comfortable distance, and before long, we were above it all. #lightning #thunderhead
Sport Utility “Vette”
In 2001 we took the Fairy Boat on a most memorable three week cruise of the waters of the southern third of the Inside Passage to Alaska. We reached Egmont, British Columbia, the second day, and after mooring at the marina, we witnessed this scene. I had never imagined a Corvette towing a boat, letContinue reading “Sport Utility “Vette””
Feeding a Flying Mouse
I had work to do in the yard; fertilize some plants, water a dry area, put fresh water in the birdbath, and finally, replenish the bird feeders. It sounds simple, but the feathery fiends kept diving to the feeders, and I felt obliged to wait until they finished. Finally, there was a break, and IContinue reading “Feeding a Flying Mouse”
New Life

An adult bird apparently had carried the fragment and dropped it away from the nest. Close examination revealed that it was a red-shouldered hawk eggshell and had been occupied very recently.Continue reading “New Life”
Of Islands and Dinosaurs
In a past century and a past millennium, we anchored by Sucia Island in the waters of northern Washington. It offered splendid moorage in places with such enchanting names as Echo Bay, Shallow Bay, and Fossil Bay. The latter is well named for its rich fossil deposits from a past era, the Jurassic Period, overContinue reading “Of Islands and Dinosaurs”
Big Bird Bath
Though wary, the hawk seemed to be enjoying the bird bath, and it was the only bird enjoying anything. The other birds were nowhere to be seen while this hawk waded in the water near the bird feeder. However, upon the hawks departure, a tufted titmouse promptly plopped onto the adjacent feeder and wrens startedContinue reading “Big Bird Bath”
Agapanthus Again
They’re back again heralding the return of summer weather. Cool temperatures in the mornings will soon depart giving way to warm mornings and hot afternoons. We will seek refuge in air conditioned rooms and in the pool, but these lavender ladies will sway in the sunlight little bothered by the heat. #agapanthus #summer #heat
