Thee Ring Circus

Many round craters are visible on this image as are three mountain ranges that seem to form partial arcs of different circles. The arrows point in the directions of these ranges, but why are they circular in form? It turns out that they are actually the outer rims of gigantic craters known as impact basins.Continue reading “Thee Ring Circus”

Beware the Smirking Cow

This painting by an unknown artist adorned a local restaurant wall and succeeded in making me just a little wary as I dined on brisket and cornbread. It seems to know something that no one else does. Is it smirking because it is a dairy cow rather than a beef cow? Perhaps it’s smug becauseContinue reading “Beware the Smirking Cow”

Fingers of Fall

A passing cold front brought cooler, drier weather and a distincely autumn pattern to sunset sky. Gone are the fluffy cumulus, and in their place, thin layered stratus clouds caught the last light from the yesterday’s sun. For a time it will bring respite from the warm subtropical air and form a shield from passingContinue reading “Fingers of Fall”

Here Comes the Sun

Yesterday’s images of the Sun revealed that something was missing compared to two days before, when I had last observed. Where’d it go?Continue reading “Here Comes the Sun”

Light on Mosquito Inlet

Yesterday we took a day trip to Ponce de Leon Inlet Lighthouse. A hike up the 203 spiraling steps of the 175-feet-tall lighthouse led us to a magnificent view of the inlet and surrounding area.Continue reading “Light on Mosquito Inlet”

Fairy Stone

Once upon a time this fairy stone was buried, soft sediment that was hardened by crystalization of calcium carbonate to form a “concretion.” Such strange words aside, it just means that silt, mud, or something else was transformed over time into a beautiful and captivating form. Fairy stones come in a myriad of curious shapes,Continue reading “Fairy Stone”

Golden Dreams

During our recent visit to Ketchikan, Alaska, I bought this gold nugget that had come from Poker Creek near the settlement of Boundary, Alaska, not far from the Yukon Territory. In the early 1900’s the creek provided down-on-their-luck prospectors a place to pan enough gold to get back into the local poker games. The photoContinue reading “Golden Dreams”
