The heads of the pineapples we ate over the past several days are now planted in the ground in our backyard along with more mature plants that produced the fruit that we enjoyed. It will take two years for the youngsters to bear fruit, but the older plants will likely provide more sweet treats nextContinue reading “Pineapple Patch”

Off With Their Heads!
In this setting those words refer to something sweet, not something grim. The “heads” of the pineapples have been removed so that the fruit can be cut into edible chunks, and the head will be planted to grow into new plants that will one day produce more delicious fruit whose heads will be removed toContinue reading “Off With Their Heads!”
Covering Our Assets
We returned from our trip to Colorado to find that two of our seven pineapples had ripened and had been nibbled to nubbins by neighborhood racoons. Fortunately, they wait until the fruit is at its peak of sweet ripeness. Three of the remaining pineapples are still green, but we picked these just a little earlyContinue reading “Covering Our Assets”
Pubertal Pineapple
They no longer look infantile, but they are not fully developed; in human terms they are pubertal. The developing pineapples in our backyard have the awkward adolescent appearance of a fruit that will soon mature into full adulthood. Sweet, I can hardly wait! #pineapple #pubertal #adolescence
Hawaiian Eye
On return to Florida, I discovered this budding pineapple bloom winking at me like an eye from one of our plants. It is a descendant of pineapples obtained from Hawaii, and we look forward to seeing more in the other plants soon. #pineapple #bloom #hawaiian #winking
Pineapple Lonely
The pineapple patch was pruned and replanted two years ago, and as expected this year we have a pineapple, but only on one plant. They usually start producing within two years of planting, as this one did. However, the eleven others didn’t bother this year, and we don’t know why. We will keep good companyContinue reading “Pineapple Lonely”
Season to Be Freezin’
No sympathy is expected from northerners, but we do get cold in Florida as well. A hard freeze is expected each of the next three nights. In an all out attempt to salvage our pineapple patch, we have covered the plants and placed lights under the cover. Will it work? Will know in a fewContinue reading “Season to Be Freezin’”
Perpetual Pineapples
Our patch produced eight pineapples this year from plants that needed to be replaced at the end of the season. Those aged plants were replaced with the tops of their own pineapple fruits (the smaller plants towards the back of the patch). In a sense, the old plants were replaced by themselves, just like theContinue reading “Perpetual Pineapples”
Sweet Dreams
A couple of hard freezes chilled our expectations for our pineapple patch, but to our surprise at least eight new pineapples are poking out from the frostbitten plants. Sweeeet!
Home Sweet Home
While tidying up our pineapple plot, we discovered this frog snugly resting on a leaf. These pineapple plants produce really delicious fruit, so this frog has a very sweet home indeed.
