This young hawk perched on the backyard feeder and had us searching the books to identify it. Bandings on the tailfeathers looked familiar, but the rest not so much. Finally, I took its photo and the online app identified it as a juvenile red-shouldered hawk. We have lots of these hawks in our neighborhood, butContinue reading “Little Red Riding-hawk”

Hiding in Plain Sight
Had I not seen him fly up to this perch, I may not have seen him at all. He was hard to find, but that was the point. His secret to survival is to see and not be seen by his “food.” After due deliberation, I decided to call him “Waldo.” #hawk #redshoulderedhawk #oaktree #waldo
Out With the Bath Water
It’s bathing done, the hawk beat a hasty exit from the birdbath, leaving behind a streaming trail of droplets. (Composite of two images) #birdbath #hawk #redshoulderedhawk
Dogs of a Feather
On our return to morning walks after our prolonged vacation, we were greeted by our good friend Daisy, who had found a hawk’s feather. It was not a gift, but she did want to show it off to her admirers. I must say it did look good “on her.” I have yet to encounter otherContinue reading “Dogs of a Feather”
Mocking the Bird
There were strange flurries visible outside the window so I had to go investigate. A red-shouldered hawk had perched on the birdfeeder, and a mockingbird had become fed up with it. After several passes from different directions the mockingbird zeroed on the seat of its problem. After a quick lick to the hawk’s derriere, theContinue reading “Mocking the Bird”
Bird Watching
The hawk settled on its usual branch in our backyard where it perched, patiently watching, waiting for subtle signs of the slightest motion of some sort of prey that it could turn into a meal. Both it and its mate on a nearby nest were in serious need of nourishment, while tiny creatures below didContinue reading “Bird Watching”
They’ve Left the Nest
The nest is empty; two young hawks have left for the local trees and are learning how to live and hunt on their own under the watchful eyes of their parents. Their presence is made known with their calls, clumsy appearances in the back yard, and an occasional glimpse of fallen feathers which will soonContinue reading “They’ve Left the Nest”
New Life
Upon return from our morning walk yesterday, we spied an eggshell fragment on the driveway that was not there when we had left earlier. An adult bird apparently had carried the fragment and dropped it away from the nest. Close examination revealed that it was a red-shouldered hawk eggshell and had been occupied very recently.Continue reading “New Life”
Big Bird Bath
Though wary, the hawk seemed to be enjoying the bird bath, and it was the only bird enjoying anything. The other birds were nowhere to be seen while this hawk waded in the water near the bird feeder. However, upon the hawks departure, a tufted titmouse promptly plopped onto the adjacent feeder and wrens startedContinue reading “Big Bird Bath”
Feathered Friends
Spring has come and a young hawk’s mind turns to–well it isn’t exactly spring training. There are at least two mating pairs of these hawks in our neighborhood; one pair with a nest located one street over from us and another nesting in the tree in our front yard. Their intention of hatching and raisingContinue reading “Feathered Friends”
